This area retains many architectural gems but has also been a source of inspiration for film.
In Civitavecchia, in the urban area, we find great films such as 'Noi cannibali' by A. Leonviola and 'Che ora è' by E. Scola, but also more recent productions such as 'L'uomo nero' by S. Rubini and 'Zoolander 2' by B. Stiller, set in 'Fortino del Lazzaretto'.
The ruins of Monterano are and continue to be a favoured set for many films, from 'Il Marchese del Grillo', still by M. Monicelli, to 'Pinocchio' by R. Benigni, to the recent 'Il primo Re' by M. Rovere, both filmed in the neighbouring woods, while the 'lunar' landscape of the Manziana solfatara has hosted many 'Italian-style' westerns from the late 1960s.
Finally, heading back down the coast towards Ladispoli, the presence of R. Rossellini can still be felt, as he was very attached to this town, where he spent his summer holidays as a child. Many films have been set here, such as the fascist war trilogy ('The Man of the Cross', 'The White Ship', 'A Pilot Returns') and it was here, in the Moretti Cinema, that the premiere of 'Rome, Open City' was screened.
Other important productions followed, such as 'Umberto D.' by V. De Sica and 'Il sorpasso' by D. Risi, for some scenes.
More recently, 'Velocità massima' by D. Vicari, which was inspired by 'Il sorpasso'.
