The first core of the town developed on the castle spur (6th to 7th century) on the site of a probable Roman pre-existence.
This initial castrum was soon joined by a suburb, which intensified to such an extent that (9th-10th centuries) a wall was built to protect it.
The fortification system, still preserved in parts, in its original perimeter excluded the eastern part of the present village (castro novo), which developed between the 13th and 14th centuries. The route then passed the castle and followed the current route to Piazza Cavour, bending down Corso Vittorio Emanuele Il and continuing along Via Dante Alighierito the slope of the belvedere.
It became civitas in the century. XI (bull of Sergius IV).
