Civitavecchia is a city rich in monuments and archaeological sites that testify to the historical presence of different eras and civilisations.
Developing from an Etruscan settlement, the city increasingly took on a strategic role in Roman times due to its proximity to Rome and the emperor Trajan, the city's founder.
Later, in medieval times, successive Popes contributed to the development of the city by commissioning the construction of monuments and historical buildings.
Today, the ancient Centumcellae is an important centre on the Lazio coast, which still maintains its strategic importance thanks to its port which hosts many tourists every day.
The route proposes a journey of discovery of this beautiful municipality and is aimed at both 'land' and 'sea' travellers, passing by the most important places in the city. The route starts at the harbour and passes through all the most important and ancient sites in this area such as the Fortino di San Pietro, the Darsena Romana and Magazzini Romani, up to the Fortezza Michelangelo.
Afterwards, the route continues inside the city along Corso Centocelle , passing the most important and beautiful churches such as the Cathedral of San Francesco d'Assisi, the Church of the Stella and the Church of Santa Maria dell'Orazione e Morte.
