A route through history and rural landscapes, from the Etruscan remains of Tarquinia to the medieval village of Montalto di Castro, crossing agricultural plains and enjoying wide views over the Maremma of Lazio.
This stage of the Cammino degli Etruschi is a journey between history and land, blending the greatness of the Etruscan civilisation with the rural landscapes that have shaped the Maremma laziale for centuries. From Tarquinia to Montalto di Castro, the route unfolds across an open, flat terrain, where light and horizon stretch unbroken into the distance.
The hike starts in the heart of Tarquinia, one of the most iconic cities of antiquity, with its rich Etruscan and medieval heritage. Towers, walls, and ancient tuff streets mark the departure from the town, soon giving way to cultivated fields and vast expanses that speak of a deep-rooted agricultural tradition.
As you progress, the landscape gradually shifts: the hills flatten, the sky opens up, and the first sea breezes begin to emerge. The broad geometry of the fields is interrupted here and there by small patches of wild vegetation, with paths that follow the natural rhythm of the land. Here, time seems to slow down, inviting you to notice the details: the colour of the soil, the silhouettes of the trees, the sound of the wind rustling through the grasses.
Approaching Montalto di Castro, the scenery changes once more: the appearance of rural buildings signals the transition to the town, where the village clusters around its medieval fortress. The Guglielmi Castle dominates the historic centre, with its cobbled streets and tuff architecture preserving the memory of a borderland between Maremma and Lazio.
A route that invites exploration, with no particular technical challenges, but full of the charm of an authentic landscape, where every stretch tells a fragment of history, scenery, and everyday life.
